How to write a resume that will catch the recruiter’s eye? Check out some tips

If you’re just starting to write or improve your resume, this article is just for you! You will find here some useful information that will allow you to prepare an eye-catching application and show your best side to the recruiter.

Professional goal

A resume usually presents your previous experience, but it also has a section where you can tell more about your plans for the future, and outline the direction in which you would like to develop further. Take advantage of this and specify your career goal. Defining it is especially important if you are applying for a position in which you have no experience so far – this way you can motivate your application and give it a broader context.

More is not always better

A key part of your resume is the work experience section. Carefully choose those duties from your scope that were the most important for a given position, but also think about what is worth highlighting in the context of the role you are applying for. Perhaps you performed tasks that were not part of your daily routine, but appeared from time to time and closely correspond to the duties of the position you are applying for. Do not forget to mention them! Also remember that more is not always better – if you provide too extensive descriptions for particular jobs, there is a risk that the most important information will not be noticed. In this section, it is also worth mentioning the tools, technologies or your role in the team.

Soft skills in your resume

You usually do not need to be reminded about placing information about hard skills such as stack knowledge, foreign languages or information about your certificates, but did you also add information about soft skills? Why they are important and how to display them in your application you will learn in the next article.

Keywords

After the initial preparation of your application, it’s a good idea to analyze it in the context of… the job advertisement for which you intend to apply. Your resume is a response to it, so check whether the information it contains matches what was in the requirements from the job offer. Pay attention to the keywords, skills or tools indicated and compare them to your document.

Resume checklist

Make sure that your application contains all the most important information that may affect your invitation to an interview: specific dates of employment (month/year), position & company name, knowledge of foreign languages and level of proficiency, additional skills and certifications (highlight those that are related to the role you are applying for), education and consent to data processing – necessary to participate in the recruitment process.

Last, but not least

At the end check the correctness of data (especially contact details!), typos and graphic design. Note that for some roles, these elements can be very important: they will confirm or deny your skills. For example, if you are applying for a tester position and there are typos in your application, the “eye for detail” will not sound credible. If, on the other hand, you are applying for a job related to data visualization and your resume will not be aesthetically thought out, then your candidacy will be probably less convincing.
